Taaj Mehal

TAAJ MEHAL was built in 22 years (1631-1653) with the orders of Shah Jahan and it was dedicated to Mumtaz Mahal (Arjumand Bano Begum), the wife of Shah. 20.000 workers labored and 32 crore rupees were spent during the construction of the monument and it was built according to Islamic architecture. It is one of the Unesco world heritage site.

TAAJ MEHAL HISTORY

In the year 1631 Shah Jahan, once a Muslim army commander, the Mogul Emperor in central India lost his beloved pregnant wife Mumtaz Mahal only a few minutes after giving birth to her fourteenth child, a daughter. The final request of his wife was for him not to marry again and prove their endless love by building a dreamlike beautiful mausoleum.

Shah Jahan was the son of Mughal Emperor Jehangir and was originally known as Prince Khurram. After being declared as the Emperor officially, he assumed the title of Abul Muzaffar Shahbuddin Muhammad Sahib-i Kiran-i Sani. However, he was known as Shah Jahan. The first aggression he faced after ascending the throne was from Jujhar Singh, son of Bir Singh Deo, the Bundela chief. After an initial surrender, he rebelled again and was finally killed by the Gonds. A major revolt for Shah Jahan came in the year 1628 by Khan Jahan Lodi, who united with the ruler of Ahmednagar and revolted.

Shah Jahan chose a peaceful site by the River of Jumna about one and a half miles away from Agra on the southern edge of the city, where could be seen from the Agra Fortress. Taj Mahal means the’ Place of the Crown’ because; Taj means “Crown” and Mahal means “place”. There are several myths about Taj Mahal.
The mosque on the left side from the garden and Mihman Khana on the right side create mirror-like symmetry. Mihman Khana was used as the guest house during the death anniversaries of Mumtaz Mahal by the visitors then as a banquet hall for the entertainments of Indian princes and British ranked-people during the late 18th and the 19th centuries. It is also told that Shah Jahan got the hands of his sculptors and architects cut off so that they would never be able to build a monument as magnificent and beautiful as the Taj again and he even got their eyes pulled out so that they would never be able to witness anything bigger and more beautiful than the monument that they had built during their lifetime.

BABER.
Babur, the founder or the Mogul Empire enthroned in 1494 at the age of twelve, as the ruler of the kingdom of Ferghana, today’s Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. His wife Ma’suma Sultan Begim gave birth to his first son Humayun meaning “fortunate” in 1508. It was followed by other sons namely Karman (1509) Askari (1516), Hindal (1519) of the other wives.

HUMAYUN
Humayun, the son of Babur, held the throne while he was twenty-two. Unlike Timurid principles he did not kill the princes also due to the request of his father. He was a mild, astrology-obsessed and superstitious character nothing compared to his father.

Akbar, the son of Humayun, who succeeded to the throne at the age of fourteen, was a talented ruler who would create a structured and a stable Moghul empire in India. As a brave and innovated General Akbar believed that wars are the only solution to stop the rise of the neighbours and exercise the progress of the army.
AURANGZAIB

The reign of Aurangzeb is rather cruel and Puritan. Alcohol, cannabis, court music and poetry and even the official court chronicles were banned. The traditional emperor’s morning audience to public was also left behind.

Taj Mahal Calligraphy
One of the ornamentations done on the surface of the Taj Mahal is the beautiful calligraphic work. The calligraphy of the Taj Mahal mainly consists of the verses and passages from the holy book of Koran. It was done by inlaying jasper in the white marble panels.
Black Taj Mahal Myth
Black Taj Mahal myth is concerned with another monument that was supposed to be built opposite the magnificent Taj, on the other side of the river. It is believed that another mausoleum, exactly identical to the original one, was to be built, dedicated to Shah Jahan himself. This monument is now called as the Black Taj, since it was to be constructed out of black marble. The legend of the Black Taj further goes on to suggest that it could not be erected, because, before this could happen, Shah Jahan got toppled by his son, Aurangzeb.
